What Do You Think of the New Home Abroad?
From the Living Room to the Lanai, your feedback is the foundation of this house
Psst… you’re at the door.
Before you sneak into the Living Room where the real conversation is about to happen, make sure you’ve subscribed so you don’t miss a moment.
And if you’d like the keys to some extra-special rooms (where the kettle’s always on and the good stories flow), consider a paid subscription. It’s the best way to support this house — and unlock all the nooks, crannies, and secret cupboards full of resources, guides, and a little extra magic.
Some mornings, I still half expect to open my laptop and see the old site — the one cobbled together from late nights, a hundred browser tabs, and more coffee than was probably wise.
But then I land here: our new digital house.
A place where every room has its own mood and purpose — the Living Room for all the messy feelings, the Kitchen for everyday rituals and small joys, the Office for the grown-up logistics, the Bedroom for the softer truths, the Library for practical tools, and the Lanai for stories that don’t quite fit anywhere else. Even the Keyholder Cellar — tucked away for the founding souls who believed in this before the paint was dry.
When I imagined this space, I hoped it might feel like a real home — not just another relocation blog. Somewhere you could wander barefoot, mug in hand, and find something that made you feel a little more seen, a little less alone.
Now that the paint has (mostly) dried and the doors are propped open, I’m realising: a house doesn’t really exist until people move in and start leaving their marks.
This week, I’d love to hear from you:
👉🏻 What would make this digital house feel even more like home for you?
No idea too small — here are a few examples to get you thinking:
“I’d love to see more real-life stories about the emotional side of moving.”
“Could you add a series on parenting abroad? That’s the season I’m in.”
“Can you include more queer perspectives in the Lanai?”
“I’d love video walkthroughs or mini-vlogs of your day-to-day life abroad.”
“A resource hub for mental health support abroad.”
“Can we have a guide on how to pack for life abroad without feeling overwhelmed?”
“More content about budgeting tools or financial planning for abroad would be so helpful.”
“A playlist or booklist for those big transition moments.”
Your feedback isn’t just “nice to have.” It’s the blueprint for making this space more useful, more human, and more like a real home for all of us navigating life across borders.
💬 Drop a comment below — short, long, or somewhere in between.
🗺️ If you’re new here, or just easing in slowly, here’s a little map:
The Living Room: emotional reflections, community threads (like this one)
The Office: visas, housing, all the grown-up bits
The Kitchen: daily rituals and cultural rhythms
The Library: practical guides and downloadable tools
The Bedroom: identity, relationships, parenting abroad
The Lanai: queer stories, creative voices, collective care
☁️ P.S. If you’re dreaming up your next chapter…
Start here: the Dream Life Abroad Starter Kit brings together all the tools, guides, and inspiration to help you design your next chapter abroad.
If you’ve got friends or readers who might love this space, feel free to pass it along — sharing helps keep the kettle warm, lights on (and Miso, the cat fed).
And if you’re ready to snag your own key to all the secret rooms (and maybe the good biscuits), consider subscribing or joining as a paid member.
Thank you for being here. Truly — you’re what makes this house more than just walls and words.
I’m biased…but you have to go through the whole house to get to the lanai!
I've been an expat twice -- 3 years in Germany and 30 years in Mexico. I've interviewed hundreds of expats over the years. Some of the common threads are: synchronicity (gentle nudges to follow a new path), finding community and being single vs a couple. Good luck to you. Kaila. Nice looking stack and great idea--the rooms. Blue
